The impact the changing environment will have on global communities is possibly the greatest single challenge facing humanity. Though the ocean covers more than 70% of Earth’s surface and is critical to understanding our planetary systems, the marine environment is critically under-sampled, leaving scientists and world leaders without the key data and insights they need to make decisions.
Saildrone is keenly aware of the need for more high-quality ocean data to enable a better understanding of Earth’s climate and help us mitigate the challenges facing our world. Saildrone’s vision of a healthy ocean and a safe, sustainable planet and our mission to sustainably explore, map, and monitor the ocean to understand, protect, and preserve our world drives every employee working to develop our uncrewed surface vehicle (USV) technology to make the world a better place.
“At Saildrone, we deploy sailing drones to collect critical data from our oceans, on processes and events affecting our planet and our people. From hurricane intelligence to fish stock management to ocean mapping, we’re the source of truth from our oceans, supporting better decision making back on land. Saildrone’s low-cost, low-carbon solution for ocean data collection is now enabling real change,” said Saildrone founder and CEO Richard Jenkins. “Our entire team is excited about the benefits that Saildrone can bring to humanity, and we’re delighted to have our important mission recognized by the Timmy Awards and the Tech in Motion team.”
The impressive capabilities of Saildrone’s uncrewed vehicles have been proven in numerous operational missions for science, ocean mapping, and maritime security, covering over 900,000 nautical miles from the Arctic to the Antarctic. The Saildrone fleet has logged more than 22,000 days at sea in some of the most extreme weather conditions on the planet.
Best Tech for Good is the latest of several awards won by Saildrone in 2022, including the Ocean Awards’ Innovation Award for revolutionizing ocean mapping, and the Albert A. Michelson Award for innovation presented by the Navy League of the United States. Saildrone was also named to Fast Company’s annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies.
Saildrone is located in Alameda, California, just across the bay from San Francisco, in a hangar on the former Naval Air Station Alameda. Saildrone’s Ocean Mapping Headquarters is in St. Petersburg, Florida, the acoustics team is based in Fall River, Massachusetts, and the government outreach team is based in Washington, DC.
